Personal Growth: ADHD Strengths That Fuel Change
For most of my life, I assumed everyone but me had access to a secret Operator’s Manual. Other people seemed to move through the world with steadiness and predictability, while I lived in a constant state of improvisation. I spent decades labeling my traits as flaws that I needed to overcome. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 50s that I understood the truth: Some of the qualities I had spent a lifetime apologizing for were actually strengths.
They’re the kind of qualities, I now understand, that shaped my career, protected me in chaos, and ultimately helped me build a life that makes sense today. Though I didn’t know it for most of my life, the same qualities I tried to fight off were directly responsible for my personal growth.
1. The Ability to See Patterns Others Miss
In my nonprofit and philanthropy work, leaders often brought me into messy situations — fractured partnerships, failing strategies, impossible timelines. They thought they needed a linear plan. What they actually needed was someone who could see the whole system at once. That was me.
The part of my brain that struggled to sit still in classrooms could walk into a crisis, map the players, identify the real problem, and generate solutions that no one had considered. I used to think this was “survival mode.” It was actually creative problem-solving, fueled by an ADHD brain that instinctively sees connections hiding beneath the surface.
2. Hyperfocus: My Unpredictable, Extraordinary Engine
I can’t manufacture it, but when a task is meaningful, urgent, or aligned with truth, hyperfocus arrives like grace. Hyperfocus feels like slipping beneath the surface of a quiet, private ocean. Time passes fast. Noise disappears. It’s a state I found myself in many times while writing my memoir and in high-stakes environments. People assumed I was disciplined. I wasn’t — I was almost tranced into something I cared about and wanted to make better.
3. Adaptability Through Uncertainty
My childhood was marked with constant change — new siblings, new crises, shifting emotional climates. I adapted early and often, learning to pivot, reorganize, anticipate, and respond instinctively. Those skills followed me into adulthood; uncertainty doesn’t rattle me. I can shift direction mid-sentence, scrap a plan that no longer works, or read dynamics before words are spoken. For years I thought this was just vigilance, the emotional smoke detector I couldn’t turn off.
Now I understand it as adaptability — an ADHD strength sharpened by life experience — not a flaw.
4. Deep Empathy: The Gift Beneath the Mask
For decades, I read emotional cues with forensic precision. Part of it is due to masking — a survival skill so many of us develop long before we know it has a name.
But the upside of masking is empathy. I can feel when someone’s energy shifts, when their voice tightens, when their story has a missing piece. My clients often say, “I’ve never told anyone this.” I used to think that meant I was simply a good listener.
5. Energy, Enthusiasm, and the Ability to Care Big
When I care about something, I care with my full attention and energy. This passion has helped me build a career across sectors, move countries at midlife, and reinvent my life over and over and over. I’ve learned that ADHD energy can overwhelm in the wrong environments — but in the right ones it presents as big ideas, vitality, and momentum.
